24 Art Deco Display Fonts
Published in Software by Dover Pubns (March, 2000)
Author: Dover Publications Inc
Average review score:

No more than OK
This volume did not have the pizzaz the Victorian fonts book had. Modernique, Plaza Suite, Clyde are interesting. If you have Broadway (or B'way Engraved), Futura Black (or Braggadocio) on your machine that should suffice. My Broadway has better kerning than these Dover ones also: test was "VA" overlap. All in all we've seen better. Still looking forward to the next book though!

24 Art Nouveau Display Fonts (Dover Electronic Display Fonts Series)
Published in Software by Dover Pubns (1999)
Authors: Dan X. Solo and Dover
Average review score:

Dan X Solo presents alot of nice fonts in clipart .
Dover has done alot to preserve the classic graphic artwork of the 19th & 20th century , presenting it as "copyright free" for minor use for those who would rather copy than make there own artwork . Here is a chance to have those fonts at a reasonable price . Dan has done pretty good in the past , but I would like to see what is on it before I buy it. On the other hand, Carol Belanger Grafton has given Dover much better quality collections and I would buy her work without question . Visual preview necessary .

368 Animal Illustrations from Buffon's "Natural History" (Dover Pictorial Archive)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1993)
Authors: Georges-Louis, Comte De Buffon Leclerc and Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon
Average review score:

Remarkable illustrations, superbly rendered; slightly nasty.
First, I don't recommend this for the average Joe. It is too free, too open, too nasty. What is the point in showing animals sphincters? The only thing more revealing would have been dissections, which by the way the author has graciously left out. Its good art work, don't get me wrong. There are some really neat animals, some I have never heard of. So it has its ups but surely, also has its downs. 368 Animal Illustrations is a superbly rendered convenient archive of remarkable illustrations gatherd around 1766 by Georges-Loius Leclerc, Compte de Buffon, a natural scientist from Montbard, France. Buffon's pictorials range from the domestic cat and the Great Dane to our more wild mamals, such as the unique looking Lion-Tailed Macaque, who belongs to the primate family. No matter which of the 368 illustrations you happen to be looking at, you will notice the life-like detail and splendid qualities with which each has been created. The pictures printed within are rich with the exact detailed quality of the original copper plate engravings from which they come, and were created and chosen by Buffon himself. Each carefully chosen depiction is precisely accurate and neatly displayed in a natural setting deemed suitable for its subject. Although several of the illustrations are somewhat revealing in their poses, let's thank Buffon for skipping those he could have chosen of the much more revealing anatomicaly dissections.

7 Spanish Fun Books
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1995)
Author: Dover Publications Inc
Average review score:

4 sticker books, 1 coloring,1 crossword, 1 story
Seven little books in a holder. The uniform size and case make a nice set for an elementary school student.

The crosswords are quite easy. Drawings are used for the clues instead of words.

The coloring book features the Spanish alphabet.

"The Tale of Peter Rabbit" has been translated into Spanish.

Each sticker book has a vocabulary list on the back page. I note that the Spanish word for stickers is used, not the Mexican word. It is possible that other words will also be different in the Americas.

I would recommend the set as a gift to a child that has had or is taking an exploratory class in Spanish, but it is not something I would use with middle or high school students.

700 Victorian Ornamental Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1998)
Authors: F. Knight and Knight. F.
Average review score:

Great B/W ornamental sketches of scenes & design elements
This is a great sourcebook for decoupage. From intricate running designs to entire one-page scenes, it has the gamut of Victorian style drawings. For the price, you could buy a couple and cut the pages and make a great decoupaged piece of furniture.

Ancient Greek Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 2000)
Author: Marty Noble
Average review score:

OK, but don't expect a lot
I love these Archive Series type of books to get inspiration for crafts and art. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with this particular one since it shows the best stuff on the cover and a few on the inside. Mostly there are enormous pictures of approximately 2-3 to a page. In fact, 18 of the 44 pages of illustration are large, single images. The illustrations are good in that there is not a lot of clutter (lots of clean spaces) and can be used as cameos, or 2 color contrasts. However, I must say that this book is not the pictoral reference that I expected. It really reminds me of a coloring book. On the other hand, the book does make an effort to briefly describe where these pictures were originally from.

Ancient Mexican Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1999)
Author: Gregory Mirow
Average review score:

Ancient Mexican Designs
This book includes over 100 Mexican designs. The great thing about the book is that all of each page tells what culture the pictures/designs come from. Depending on your needs, there are a couple not so great things about the book. First, the pictures are tough to scan into a computer & clean up in an application like Photoshop, because there are so many small detail lines (Depending on what your looking for, this may not matter.). There are also not many designs that could lend themselves to general projects (i.e. they all have an obvious Mexican feel).

Baltimore Bride's Quilt Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1993)
Author: Doreen Lynn Saunders
Average review score:

Great addition to Baltimore patterns
This book is a great addition to the Baltimore Album style patterns you already have. There are no instructions just blocks showing the patterns. I enlarged them to fit my block size and many of them I have not seen any where else. There are also border ideas shown toward the back. I think this is a good book and a wonderful asset to any quilter's library.
